The anti-
cathedral

Why decent people behave badly online, and what re-adds the missing feedback.

A room can make you quiet. A room can make you cruel.

A cathedral lowers your voice before you have decided to lower it. The ceiling, the light through coloured glass, the people already silent — nobody tells the child to be quiet. The room does the asking, and something real in him answers.

Most online spaces are built the opposite way. The psychologist John Suler identified six features that together strip out everything a cathedral supplies. None of them is a moral failing. All of them are design.

The six things that are missing

You cannot be identified. Your name is off. Whatever you do here does not attach to the person who goes to work tomorrow.

You cannot be seen. No face, no posture, no one watching you type.

Nothing happens at the same time. You say it and leave. You never stand in the silence after.

The other person becomes a voice in your head. You fill in their tone, and you fill it in worse than it was.

It stops feeling real. It reads like a game with a scoreboard rather than a conversation with a person.

Rank disappears. Everyone arrives flattened, which removes both deference and the ordinary restraint that comes with it.

What re-adds the feedback

Put a face back in. One video call does more than fifty messages. You cannot sustain contempt for someone whose face is responding to yours in real time.

Wait before sending. The missing beat is the one where you would have seen them react. Supply it yourself.

Use your name. Where you can, be identifiable. The costs are real and so is the restraint.

Ask instead of landing the point. A question they cannot fully answer makes them think. A statement that contradicts them makes them argue. One of those changes minds.

Leave the room that rewards the worst version of you. Not the internet. The room. There is a difference, and you can tell which is which by who you are three minutes after you close it.
